WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump made several statements during a press conference at the White House, addressing issues related to national security, economic policy, international trade, and foreign relations. He also hinted at massive tariffs.
President Trump confirmed that five people were injured in an attack on a military base in Georgia. Two of the injured are in critical condition. The attacker is in custody. The President stated that the accused will be dealt with according to the law.
On economic matters, President Trump spoke on the importance of domestic manufacturing. He stated that iPhones sold in the United States must be made in the United States. He noted that many companies, including Apple, are investing billions of dollars in the country and returning operations to the US.
President Trump announced plans to impose a tariff of nearly 100 per cent on imported chips and semiconductors. However, he stated that products made within the US would not be subject to this charge.
According to the President, the US economy is improving. He attributed the economic performance to legislative actions and said inflation is falling while wages are increasing. He also noted that the US stock market has reached an all-time high.
On foreign policy, President Trump reported that he has visited several countries, including Gulf nations, to promote investment in the US He also said that he had a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing the meeting as productive but stopping short of calling it a breakthrough. He expressed interest in holding further meetings with Russian officials.
President Trump claimed credit for ending five conflicts, naming Iran and Israel among the regions involved. He said that despite continued deaths in Ukraine, the war there began under the Biden administration. He also stated that Iran’s nuclear program had been completely dismantled and highlighted a B-Bomber mission that lasted 36 hours.
On international trade and sanctions, President Trump confirmed a 50 per cent tariff imposed on India for purchasing oil from Russia. He added that similar measures could be applied to China for the same reason, although no final decision has been made. He stated that the same steps taken with India could also be extended to other countries.
The President added that tech companies are investing heavily in the US and that the administration is working to encourage further domestic growth.
