BALTIMORE: At least one person died and nine more were injured, after what the local police is calling a mass shooting, in Maryland.
On Tuesday, around 7:15 PM local time, shots were fired outside the Johnson Funeral Home in Towson Maryland, at 8500 block of Loch Raven Blvd. The police officers showed up after receiving multiple reports of shooting, Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough told media.
International media is reporting a car striking the funeral home building as well. McCullough also said that the first police officer to arrive at the scene had found a vehicle on fire. The vehicle had also turned over to its side. The fire department was also called where they put out the fire, treated the victims and transported the injured to the hospital, Baltimore County Fire Department Chief Joseph Dixon said.
A news report by MSNBC News quoted Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, “This is an incident that is shocking, particularly for those of us in Baltimore County. These types of incidents are really unheard of here, so it really shocks the conscience.”
The Baltimore police released a statement that they believe this shooting incident to be a targeted event, and that there is no continued threat to the public. “BCPD is currently investigating and is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them,” MSNBC report said.
There are no reports on the condition of the nine injured, so far. According to local media, it is also not clear whether they have all been shot or got injured due to some other reason during the shooting spree. The police believe it to be an isolated incident, caused by the “ongoing, rolling type of gun situation”.
“There appears to be some type of incident that led to the vehicle crashing and catching on fire. Investigators are looking into the circumstances leading up to that,” McCollough said.
