‘I may not survive’, Pope Francis tells confidants

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis, the most powerful Catholic leader and the oldest pope in a century, is facing growing concerns over his health, sparking discussions about his potential successor.

The 88-year-old pontiff has been diagnosed with double pneumonia and is currently hospitalized as he battles the infection, Vatican sources confirm.

Doctors have advised that he remain under medical care for the coming days until he fully recovers.

Pope Francis has also reportedly confided to his close associates that he may not survive the battle with pneumonia and feels he is closer to death.

Reports suggest that a search for his successor is already underway, with several key figures emerging as frontrunners.

POSSIBLE SUCCESSORS TO POPE FRANCIS

Among the top contenders is Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy, who has served in the Vatican under Pope Francis for 11 years. At 70, he currently holds the influential position of Vatican Secretary of State.

Another strong candidate is Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He currently leads the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar, making him a significant figure in the Catholic Church.

Also in contention is Cardinal Péter Erdő of Hungary, the former president of the Council of Bishops’ Conferences of Europe. His experience and influence place him among the leading candidates to succeed Pope Francis.
