WEB DESK: Social media has a new obsession, and this time, it involves a nostalgic twist of chiffon and vintage charm. After the recent craze of realistic 3D figurines created through Google Gemini’s AI tools, a new trend has emerged, the Google Gemini Nano Banana AI Saree trend.
Over the past few days, feeds have been flooded with portraits of women dressed in delicate chiffon sarees, sporting retro hairstyles and basking in a soft golden glow. These images are not real photographs but AI-generated creations, yet they look so convincing that many users admit they did a double take.

How the trend works
The trend revolves around Gemini’s Nano Banana, a playful name for an AI image-generation tool built into the Google Gemini app. The feature lets users transform their solo portraits into vintage-style saree pictures reminiscent of old Bollywood posters or Ghibli-inspired art.
To join the trend, users need to install the Google Gemini app and sign in using their Google account. Once inside, they tap on the Banana icon, select a clear solo photo, and paste a detailed prompt describing the desired look.
The prompt can include specifications for saree colour, lighting tone, hairstyle and even the mood of the image. Within seconds, the AI weaves its magic, turning an everyday selfie into a stunning retro portrait.
One popular prompt making rounds online asks Gemini to create a “4K realistic portrait of a young Indian woman wearing a translucent red saree, with soft golden light casting a delicate shadow on a plain wall behind her.”
The charm, and the caution
While many are embracing the trend for its sheer creativity and fun, others are sounding notes of caution. Some users have raised privacy concerns, urging people to think twice before sharing personal photographs with AI platforms.
One woman even called her experience “creepy” after Gemini’s AI added a mole on her left hand that was not visible in the photo she uploaded, a mole she actually has. She wondered how the app knew about it, sparking debates over how much data these tools might be gathering.
Still, the fascination continues to grow. For now, the Nano Banana saree portraits are bringing a splash of desi glamour to timelines, one chiffon drape at a time.
