TOKYO: Details of a lawsuit filed by Nintendo earlier in September were revealed in a report released by Palworld developers Pocketpair, Inc. on Friday.
Pocketpair revealed that The Pokémon Company and Nintendo Co., Ltd. claimed that Palworld, which released in January of 2024, infringed on three patents that the two companies held.
The Pokémon Company and Nintendo Co., Ltd. Are seeing a payment of 5 million yet plus late payment damages each. Not including the late payment damages, this amounts to around 65,000 USD. The two Japanese companies are also seeking a plaintiff against Palworld, which may block future sales of the video game within Japan.
Nintendo sues hugely popular Palworld
The patents in question are numbered 7545191, 7493117, and 7528390, and relate to the popular frnachise Pokémon. One patent specifically explains a mechanic that is featured in recent Pokémon games such as Pokemon Legends: Arceus and allows a character to catch a creature by aiming and throwing a pokeball at them. Players of Palworld also catch creatures through throwing a Pal Sphere at them.
While the patents outlined in Pocketpair’s report list them as being filed between February and July of 2024, they relate to parent patents that were filed in 2021.
Pocketpair states that they “will continue to assert our position in this case through future legal proceedings.
