KERALA: An AI robot teacher is set to take charge of school classes in India.
The robot has been programmed to assist college students in engineering fundamentals at the Bhubanananda Odisha School of Engineering (BOSE) in Cuttack, Odisha.
A group of three final-year diploma students from the Electronics and Telecommunication branch — Amarendra Swain, Sadakant Jena, and Zaheer Shaikh — said they have developed the Pi Robot, a small, low-cost computer modelled as an AI teacher for robotics projects.

The developers said that the machine could enhance the learning experience of students and can operate for five to six hours and teach like an AI educator.
‘We were inspired by Iris, India’s first AI-generated schoolteacher robot created earlier this year by Makerlabs Edutech, a Kerala-based private organisation,’ they said.
While Iris is powered by advanced robotics, generative AI technology, and features an in-built voice assistant, the Pi Robot built by BOSE students employs similar techniques.
In a local interview, one of the developers explained that the robot can answer questions on a variety of subjects. The AI teacher was showcased at the Design and Innovation Centre (DIC) of BOSE.
The students reportedly took six months to build the AI teacher, following four months of research.
Amarendra Swain said: ‘Our principal asked us to create a robot teacher like the one in Kerala. We studied the Kerala project for four months before starting work on our AI teacher. The primary aim was to develop a mechanism that can resolve all student doubts within our institution.’
The trio have completed coding the robot, and all the electrical and mechanical components used in the model were manufactured at BOSE.
Stock market expected to continue bullish run, at least until year-end
‘As we do not have a dedicated server, we are using ChatGPT, which securely stores data on external servers,’ said Sadakant Jena.
Principal Hrusikesh Mohanty said that the students were given an experiment to integrate artificial intelligence into practical applications, leading to the creation of the AI teacher.
‘They have done everything from scratch, from designing the AI platform and voice recognition system to building the humanoid robot’s neck, eyes, lips, and legs, as well as coding it,’ he said.
