Skardu: German climber and Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier has tragically died after being caught in an avalanche while attempting to summit Laila Peak in the Ganche district of Baltistan. The incident occurred yesterday, resulting in her critical injuries from which she could not recover.
According to Faizullah Firaq, spokesperson for the Baltistan government, Laura Dahlmeier was part of a two-member German climbing team that had been on an expedition to conquer the 6,098-meter-high Laila Peak, located near Hushe village, for the past week.
Laura Dahlmeier and her companion, Marina Eva, were ascending the peak via a designated route when a sudden avalanche struck on Monday at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters.
In the accident, one female climber sustained minor injuries and was successfully rescued by a Pakistan Army helicopter and transferred to the base camp. However, Laura Dahlmeier was severely injured. Despite immediate rescue efforts to extract her, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away.
The spokesperson confirmed that Laura Dahlmeier’s climbing partner, Marina Eva, successfully managed to return to the base camp and is safe with the rescue personnel.
Laura Dahlmeier had achieved significant international acclaim in biathlon. She won two gold and one bronze medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Furthermore, she secured 7 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals at the Biathlon World Championships.
She retired from biathlon in 2019 at the young age of 25 and subsequently pursued mountaineering as her passion.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier offered his condolences to her parents, stating, “Laura was an extraordinary athlete and proudly represented Germany worldwide. She was a symbol of peace, happiness, and mutual respect beyond borders.”
Dahlmeier had been a state-certified mountain and ski guide since 2023 and also performed voluntary rescue services in her hometown of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
It’s important to note that hundreds of local and foreign climbers attempt to scale Pakistan’s northern mountains each year. However, challenging weather conditions and hazards like landslides often prove fatal. In recent days, at least 20 Pakistani tourists have also gone missing in Chilas district due to severe rains and floods.
