South African resistance breaks as Pakistan build strong lead

Pakistan built a strong first-innings lead in the Lahore Test after breaking South Africa’s resistance and bowling them out for 269. The home side now holds a valuable 109-run advantage heading into the next innings.

Day three was dominated by Pakistan’s spinners, who dismantled the visitors’ lower order despite a resilient century from Tony de Zorzi. The morning session proved decisive, as South Africa lost their remaining wickets quickly, falling well short of Pakistan’s strong total of 378.

South Africa resumed play on the third day at 216 for 6, hoping to narrow the gap against Pakistan’s imposing first-innings total. Tony de Zorzi (81*) and Senuran Muthusamy (6*) were at the crease, but the morning quickly tilted in Pakistan’s favour. Sajid Khan struck early, dismissing Muthusamy for 11.

De Zorzi continued to fight and reached a well-crafted century, but his resistance ended on 104 when he attempted an aggressive shot and was caught by Shaheen Afridi off Nauman Ali’s bowling. After his dismissal, the collapse was swift. Keshav Maharaj fell cheaply to Sajid Khan, and Kagiso Rabada was removed for a duck, leaving the visitors all out for 269.

Left-arm spinner Nauman Ali led the charge with a superb six-wicket haul, applying constant pressure and exploiting the conditions expertly. Sajid Khan provided excellent support with three wickets, while Salman Ali Agha claimed one to wrap up the tail.

Earlier, Pakistan had posted a commanding 378 in their first innings, thanks to strong performances from key batters. Imam-ul-Haq and Salman Ali Agha both scored 93, narrowly missing out on centuries. Mohammad Rizwan contributed a valuable 75, while captain Shan Masood added 76 to ensure Pakistan set a strong foundation.

With a solid lead in hand and momentum on their side, Pakistan will now look to build on this advantage and push for a decisive result in the remaining days of the Test match.
