In a historic moment for Namibian cricket, the national team stunned South Africa with a thrilling last-ball victory in their first-ever T20 International win over the Proteas.
Namibia has achieved a landmark moment in its cricketing journey, defeating South Africa for the first time ever in a T20 International. The thrilling win came in the only T20 match of South Africa’s tour, with the hosts chasing down a 135-run target on the final ball to clinch a six-wicket victory. Ruben Trumpelmann was named Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance.
Opting to bat first, South Africa managed 134 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Key contributions came from Jason Smith (31), Ruben Hermann (23), and Dwaine Pretorius (22).
Namibia’s bowlers kept the visitors in check throughout the innings. Left-arm pacer Ruben Trumpelmann led the attack with figures of 3 for 28, while Max Hängula picked up 2 wickets, and JJ Smit and Tangeni Lungameni Sheekongo chipped in with one apiece.
Namibia’s run chase saw a mix of composure and nerves, with wickets falling at regular intervals. Skipper Gerhard Erasmus contributed a valuable 21, but it was wicketkeeper-batsman Zane Green who anchored the innings with a calm and unbeaten 30 runs, holding the chase together.
In a nail-biting finish, it was Ruben Trumpelmann who sealed the historic win, remaining not out with 11 runs off just 8 balls, ensuring Namibia reached the target on the very last delivery.
For South Africa, Nandre Burger and Andile Simelane took two wickets each, but the bowlers couldn’t prevent Namibia from scripting one of the most memorable upsets in T20 history.
This match is being widely celebrated as Namibia’s greatest cricketing triumph to date.
