Unhealthy air quality persists in Islamabad – HUM News

The forecast predicts mostly sunny skies throughout the day, with a high expected to reach around 34 degrees Celsius. Winds will blow around 15 kilometre per hour, providing some relief from the heat.

The current weather condition is typical for this time of the year in Islamabad, where summer months often bring significant heat. However, high humidity can amplify perceived temperature in the city.

High humidity levels hinder the body’s ability to cool itself through perspiration, leading to discomfort.

The air quality index (AQI) is currently recorded at 158, categorising it as “unhealthy”. This level suggests that everyone may begin to experience health effects, while sensitive groups may face more serious health issues.

The primary pollutant contributing to the pollution is PM2.5, with a concentration of 43 µg/m3. PM2.5 refers to particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers, capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and entering the bloodstream. This poses a huge health risk for humans.

Other pollutants reported include Ozone (O3) AT 30 ppb (parts per billion), PM2.5 at 42.5 µg/m3, PM10 at 31.5 µg/m3, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at 32 ppb, carbon monoxide   9CO) at 875 ppb, and sufer dioxide (SO2) at 5 ppb.

Air quality in Islamabad has shown considerable fluctuations, particularly during winter months when pollution levels tend to rise due to increased heating and vehicular emissions.

The AQI in the capital was recorded at 160 yesterday, also classified at “unhealthy”. On 25th June, it was slightly better at 145, categorised as “poor”. This trend highlights ongoing challenges related to urbanisation, industrial emissions and traffic congestion.

Residents in Islamabad are advised to stay informed about the air quality levels and take necessary precautions if venturing outdoors.

Monitoring these conditions is important for public health, especially for vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions.
