Rising waters: Tarbela Dam spillways opened – HUM News

ISLAMABAD: Continuous heavy rainfall in the upper regions of the country has caused a sharp rise in water levels at Tarbela Dam, prompting authorities to open its spillways.

According to NDMA, water discharge is expected to increase to between 260,000 and 270,000 cusecs as a result of the spillway operation. This may lead to high flood levels in the Indus River.

Residents living near spillway routes have been advised to remain cautious. Alerts have been issued for areas along the river in Nowshera, Swabi, and Haripur.

The NDMA has urged people to avoid visiting rivers and water channels, especially in the vicinity of the Indus. Tourists have also been advised to exercise caution at riverside recreational spots and follow instructions from local authorities.

Rescue 1122, civil defence, district administrations, and other relevant agencies have been instructed to take precautionary measures.

Locals have been asked to stay away from water bodies and follow all safety guidelines to avoid any potential danger.
