Punjab University and Wuhan University’s agricultural breakthrough – HUM News

LAHORE: Punjab University (PU), in collaboration with Chinese Wuhan University, has developed a new hybrid rice seed that promises to triple rice yields per acre. This development that could revolutionise Pakistan’s agricultural sector.

The newly developed rice seed, named PU786, is the first Honglian variety of hybrid rice to be produced in Pakistan. Trials have shown a dramatic increase in yield, from the current average of 1,600 kg per acre to an impressive 5,600 kg per acre.

The hybrid rice seed is the product of a decade of collaborative research between scientists from PU’s Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics and their counterparts at Wuhan University. The team included Prof Dr Muhammad Ashfaq, Dr Muhammad Ali Klasra, Prof Renshan Zhu, Dr Xianting Wu, and Mr Xu, among others.

Dr Ashfaq confirmed that the new rice variety has successfully undergone extensive field-testing across various cities in all four provinces of Pakistan. “This hybrid seed is not only high-yielding but also resistant to bacterial diseases, extreme heat, and harmful insects,” he said, reiterating its potential to transform national rice production.

The Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) has officially approved the new hybrid variety for commercial use.

Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali hailed the innovation as a “revolution in Pakistan’s agricultural sector,” noting its potential to enhance food security, boost farmer incomes, and significantly increase the country’s rice exports. “This is not just about science; it’s about creating real impact for the nation’s economy and well-being,” he said.
