LAHORE: Punjab Home Department has transferred all records of pardons and remaining sentences of prisoners online. The families of prisoners can now access these records and can find out about release dates, through SMS service, Punjab Home Department Spokesperson said on Friday.

The provincial government has taken this step as part of the efforts towards the welfare of prisoners, and comes as part of the Prisons Management Information System (PMIS) initiative. The service was inaugurated by Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal.
Families of the prisoners can access this information, by sending PMIS (Space) (Prisoner’s Computer Number) to 8070. The details of the last two pardons and the date of release will be given in the reply message of the Home Department.
The spokesperson said that according to the prison rules, there are many forms of reduction in sentences or pardon of prisoners. In addition to the announcement of pardon at the official level, pardon is granted for education, acquisition of technical skills and good character.
He said that every pardon in the sentence must be made part of the prisoner’s record immediately. Prisoners or their families will have no difficulty in obtaining the record of pardon in the sentence,the home department spokesperson added.

Punjab Home Secretary said that all data on pardons and releases has been made online in a transparent manner. “Through the modern system, prisoners will not be kept in prison beyond the prescribed sentence,” Mengal said, adding, “Rules and regulations have been issued to update the record of pardons of prisoners in a timely manner”.
