LAHORE: The Punjab government, under the Punjab National Calamities Act of 1958, has declared smog an official disaster, enabling swift action to tackle the crisis.
An official notification to this effect has been issued.
This declaration gives all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) across the province the authority to act as relief commissioners measures to reduce smog, with a special focus on Lahore.

According to the notification, stringent steps are to be implemented. There is now a ban on burning crop residue, plastic, tires, and other waste materials, which are significant contributors to air pollution. Additionally, authorities have outlawed the sale and use of substandard fuels, a move intended to improve air quality.
To ease traffic congestion, parking spots that cause blockages will be eliminated, aiding in smoother traffic flow and reducing vehicle emissions. The notification also restricts stone crushers from operating without water controls, which helps minimize dust and particulate matter situation and protect public health.
