PM Sharif nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize, again – HUM News

SHARM EL-SHEIKH/ISLAMABAD: In a high-profile endorsement on the global stage, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has once again nominated US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The premier cited Trump’s “extraordinary efforts and contributions for peace” in both South Asia and the Middle East as the principal rationale behind this nomination.

This announcement came during the Gaza Peace Summit held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, following a recently brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The summit, co-chaired by Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, brought together representatives from over 20 countries to endorse a roadmap for post-war reconstruction and governance in Gaza. PM Sharif is also among the attendees of the Summit, where he went on invitation from President Trump.

During his speech at the summit, PM Sharif referred to Trump as “genuinely, a man of peace” and credited him with playing a pivotal role in defusing recent hostilities between nuclear-armed neighbors Pakistan and India.

In an unscripted moment that drew attention from delegates and media alike, Trump paused mid-speech and offered the microphone to Sharif, prompting him, “Do you want to say something that you were telling me the other day?”

Sharif accepted and delivered an impassioned address, praising Trump’s mediation during the May 2025 Pakistan-India conflict. “President Trump relentlessly and untiringly worked, day in and day out, to restore peace,” he said, adding, “He not only helped avert a catastrophe in South Asia but also made significant contributions toward stability in the Middle East.”

Shehbaz Sharif added that Trump’s intervention during the South Asian crisis “saved millions of lives,” while also commending his continued interest in resolving the long-standing Kashmir dispute. The Pakistani leader linked regional peace to the implementation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, a point of historic contention between India and Pakistan.

In response to Sharif’s remarks, Trump called the praise “beautiful” and added with a grin, “There wasn’t anything left to say. Let’s go home!” He also took the opportunity to commend Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed optimism that “Pakistan and India are now going to live very nicely together.” In response to this, PM Sharif smilingly winked at President Trump.

SECOND NOMINATION BY PAKISTAN

Sharif’s renewed endorsement of Trump follows Pakistan’s formal nomination of the US president for the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this year. In a statement posted to social media in June, Pakistan’s foreign ministry credited Trump’s diplomatic intervention with facilitating a ceasefire between Islamabad and New Delhi during a brief but intense military escalation.

At the time, Pakistan accused India of “unprovoked and unlawful aggression,” launching what it described as a “measured and precise” military response under Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos.

The Pakistani government hailed Trump’s role in securing a ceasefire on May 10, portraying it as a continuation of his “pragmatic diplomacy” and peace-building legacy, particularly in relation to South Asia and the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

While Trump has publicly taken credit for mediating the ceasefire, the Indian government has downplayed US involvement, asserting that the resolution resulted from direct military-to-military talks.
