ISLAMABAD: On the third death anniversary of Syed Ali Geelani, a towering figure in the Kashmiri freedom movement, Pakistan’s leaders have paid heartfelt tributes, reaffirming their unwavering support for the people of Kashmir.
Syed Ali Geelani, who dedicated the majority of his life to the struggle for Kashmir’s freedom, passed away on September 1 2021, while under house arrest by the Indian authorities.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif honoured Geelani’s enduring legacy, stating, “Syed Ali Geelani will always be remembered as a credible name in Kashmir’s freedom movement. His sacrifices and dedication to the cause of self-determination for the Kashmiri people will forever remain etched in our hearts and minds.” The Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to providing moral, diplomatic, and political support to the Kashmiri struggle for freedom.
President Asif Ali Zardari also paid tribute, highlighting the unyielding spirit of the Kashmiri leader. “Even the hardships of imprisonment could not weaken the determination of Syed Ali Geelani,” Zardari remarked. “He remained a beacon of hope and resistance for decades, and his sacrifices will not go in vain. Pakistan stands firm in its support for the legitimate struggle of the Kashmiri people.”
The leaders’ messages came as both sides of the Line of Control observed Geelani’s anniversary, renewing their vows to continue the struggle for Kashmir’s freedom. Syed Ali Geelani’s steadfast commitment to the Kashmiri cause made him a symbol of resistance against oppression, and his legacy continues to inspire millions in the region.
Section 144 imposed in Islamabad
Geelani, who had been under continuous house arrest since 2010, passed away at his residence in Srinagar three years ago. His life and sacrifices remain a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and self-determination in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
