KARACHI: Over 400 buildings in old city areas of Karachi have been declared dangerous, and at the risk of collapsing. The report comes after building collapse in Lyari, with the death toll totalling 27 until now.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has addressed the media regarding the recent Lyari incident, expressing regret over the fatalities. He said that the immediate priority, for now , is to save those still trapped, and confirmed that the rescue operation would be completed by the end of the day.
The CM also said that over 400 buildings in the Old City area have been identified as dangerous, with most located in the southern district.
He noted that the collapsed structure in Lyari was built without the necessary approvals and assured that those responsible for the construction would face severe consequences.
CM Murad also spoke about a building in Agra Taj, which had been vacated the previous night. He revealed that this structure had been erected a few years ago without the required authorization from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA).
The chief minister also advised citizens to verify the legal approvals of buildings before purchasing property, urging caution. He assured that efforts are underway to review alternative accommodation options for the residents of more than 400 dangerous buildings in the Old City area.
