Mayo Hospital deaths: Vexa injection banned across Punjab – HUM News

LAHORE: After the death of two patients at Mayo Hospital due to an adverse reaction to an injection, the Punjab government has banned the use of “ Vexa” and Neutroline injections across the province.

The Directorate of Drug Control has issued directives to pharmacies, prohibiting the use of “Vexa” and “Neutroline” injections.

The notice states that specific batches of these injections are suspected to pose a health risk. Their use will remain suspended until test reports are received.

Authorities say the decision was made in the interest of patient safety.

Three nurses of the Mayo hospital, Saima Seher, Nazia Hassan, and Sunaina Khalid, have been suspended for negligence.

Authorities have issued show-cause notices to the suspended nurses, instructing them to report to the Punjab Health Department and submit written explanations within seven days.

An inquiry committee found the nurses responsible for misconduct, citing their errors in handling powdered injections, including reconstitution, dilution, and administration. Poor dispensing practices reportedly caused adverse drug reactions in 16 patients on March 9, 2025, in the Chest Surgical Ward.

The report directly links the incident to the nurses’ negligence.

PUNJAB CM TAKES NOTICE

The Punjab government has taken notice of the incident, with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz pledging to tackle systemic flaws in public healthcare.

This comes shortly after CM Maryam Nawaz dismissed the Medical Superintendent (MS) of Mayo Hospital following a surprise visit, where she observed severe mismanagement and inadequate patient care.

During her visit, patients and attendants raised multiple complaints about the shortage of medicines, poor hygiene, and insufficient medical facilities.
