Lyari building collapse: Sindh govt forms committee to probe – HUM News

WEB DESK: The Sindh government has constituted a five-member inquiry committee to investigate the collapse of a building in Lyari’s Baghdadi area, which resulted in loss of at least 27 lives and property damage. According to an official notification, the committee will determine the causes of the collapse, identify those responsible, and propose measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi has been appointed to chair the committee, while Special Secretary for Local Government Ayesha Hamid, Director of Complaints for Dangerous Buildings Asif Nadeem Ahmed, Deputy Director of Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) Asif Ali Langa, and other officials will also serve as members.

Chairman Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD), Hasan Bakhshi, revealed that this was not an isolated incident. Over the past eight years, 12 buildings have collapsed in the area, claiming over 150 lives. He criticised the lack of legislation regarding the demolition of dangerous structures, stating, “Simply demolishing unstable buildings is not the solution, the government must enact proper laws.”

Bakhshi urged authorities to introduce new construction regulations and offered the council’s support in conducting technical surveys through NESPAK. “We are ready to play our role in ensuring safer construction practices,” he added.

The latest incident has once again highlighted Karachi’s persistent issue of building collapses, often attributed to poor construction standards, illegal modifications, and weak enforcement of safety laws. The probe committee’s findings will be closely watched as calls grow for stricter oversight to prevent further tragedies.
