ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has arrived in Bangladesh on a two-day official visit from August 23 to 24.

The visit is being made on the special invitation of the Bangladesh government.

At Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister was received by Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, Ambassador Asad Alam Siam, High Commissioner of Pakistan to Bangladesh Imran Haider, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Pakistan Muhammad Iqbal Khan and officials of Pakistan High Commission, Foreign Office Spokesperson said in a press release.

“The visit is a significant milestone in Pakistan-Bangladesh relations as a Pakistani Foreign Minister is visiting Bangladesh after a gap of around 13 years,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

During his stay in Dhaka, the Deputy PM will hold key meetings with top Bangladeshi leaders, including Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus, Foreign Affairs Advisor Muhammad Touhid Hussain, and other senior officials.

Talks will focus on strengthening bilateral ties, along with regional and global issues, according to the Foreign Office spokesperson.

Several MoUs to enhance cooperation between the two countries are also expected to be signed during the visit.

The foreign minister’s visit comes amid improving relations between Islamabad and Dhaka following the ouster of PM Hasina, who fled to India after a student-led uprising.

Last month, the two countries made a major diplomatic breakthrough by agreeing in principle to offer visa-free entry for holders of diplomatic and official passports.

This agreement was reached during a high-level meeting in Dhaka between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh’s Home Minister, Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
