ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced on Wednesday that an international cable consortium has completed the repair of a faulty repeater in one of its submarine cables, restoring internet services across the country.
A day earlier, PTCL had said that internet users — particularly in parts of upper Punjab and the federal capital — were experiencing disruptions due to law and order issues and would face further slowdowns for several hours because of planned maintenance work.
The company had stated that repair work on a malfunctioning section of one of its submarine cables had been scheduled under the supervision of the international cable consortium.
In a statement on Wednesday, PTCL spokesperson Aamir Pasha said the repair activity, which began at 11 am on October 14, was successfully completed, and internet speed and connectivity have now been fully restored nationwide.
The state-owned PTCL operates three submarine fibre-optic cable networks that provide Pakistan’s international internet connectivity. Out of six submarine cable systems linking Pakistan to the global internet, three are managed by PTCL, two by Transworld Associates (Private) Limited, and one — the PEACE cable — by Cyber Internet Services.
These submarine systems have a combined capacity of 13 terabits per second, while Pakistan’s national usage ranges between 7 and 8 terabits per second.
