Rawalpindi’s Gawalmandi area received 200mm of rain, which the DG termed an alarming situation for Nullah Lai, known for its flood risks during monsoon.

He further added that intense rainfall will persist today, but the overall weather pattern indicates continued rain in the coming days.

The rescue and emergency services have been alerted, and instructions were issued in advance, said the DG.

Meanwhile, rainfall is also expected in Karachi and several other cities of Sindh starting from July 19, raising concerns for urban flooding in southern parts of the country.

Torrential rains have lashed Rawalpindi and Islamabad since Wednesday evening, triggering a flood-like situation across both cities. Over 230mm of rainfall was recorded, prompting WASA to go on high alert.

In Rawalpindi, low-lying areas were flooded, and machinery was deployed to handle drainage, according to WASA Managing Director. The water level in Nullah Lai rose further, hitting 20 feet at Katarian and 19 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge, nearing danger levels.

WASA officials confirmed that all available resources were being used for drainage and rescue operations.
