‘Impressive, great man’, Trump praises COAS Asim Munir again – HUM News

THE HAGUE: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday gave impressive remarks about Field Marshal and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Syed Asim Munir, whom he recently hosted at a luncheon at the White House after brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference after the NATO summit, Trump called COAS Asim Munir a “really impressive” personality, recalling that his administration had helped stop conflict between the nuclear-armed South Asian countries.

Praising Field Marshal Munir, Trump said: “I met the general from Pakistan last week in my office — a very impressive personality, a great man.”

Reiterating his stance about the India-Pakistan ceasefire, he called Modi a “great gentleman” and described the conflict between India and Pakistan as the “most important” of all the recent ones due to the fact that it involved two nuclear powers with the high risk of the conflict turning into a nuclear war.

“We stopped the war between Pakistan and India — two major nuclear powers — and urged them to pursue trade instead.”

Emphasising his point, Trump said he had told Pakistan and India that there wouldn’t be any trade with the US if the two nuclear powers kept fighting. However, they responded that they wanted a trade agreement with the United States, he said.

President Trump had met COAS Asim Munir at the Cabinet Room of the White House on June 18.

When asked what he wanted to achieve from the lunch meeting with COAS, Trump told reporters at the White House: “Well, I stopped a war … I love Pakistan.”

“But I stopped the war between Pakistan and India. This man was extremely influential in stopping it from the Pakistan side. Modi from the India side and others. They were going at it – and they’re both nuclear countries. I got it stopped.”
