PESHAWAR: The federal government has decided to restore the jirga system and strengthen the civil administration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In this regard, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has formed a high-level committee to review the proposals.
According to the notification issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the convener of the 18-member committee will be Federal Minister for Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Affairs and Border Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam, while the deputy convener will be Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar.
Other members of the committee will include Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Special Investment Finance Council (SIFC) Secretary Dr Jahanzeb.
Other members of the said committee include former Chief Secretary KP Shakeel Durrani, former IG P KP Salahuddin Mehsud, Federal Secretaries Kashmir Affairs, Planning and Development, Economic Affairs Division, Home Affairs and Overseas Pakistanis, as well as Chief Secretary KP and Inspector General of Police KP.
It should be noted that two weeks ago, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced the restoration of the jirga system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the merged tribal districts in a meeting held at the Governor House, Peshawar.
