Glacier burst warning issued for five KP districts – HUM News


PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert warning of potential glacier bursts in five districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

According to the alert, there is a risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Upper and Lower Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan until July 1 due to rising temperatures and ongoing monsoon rains.

Glaciers are rapidly melting owing to prolonged heatwaves, increasing water level and sudden floods playing havoc in the region.

Heavy rainfall lashes Punjab: PDMA issues high alert

PDMA has instructed all relevant departments to remain prepared to tackle any emergency situation caused by heavy rainfall.

Locals and tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during rainfall, especially in mountainous or glacial regions.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and emergency response teams have been alerted in vulnerable areas in case of glacier burst in KP .

The current rain spell is expected to last till 1st July.

“During this period, scattered to widespread rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy fa11s, are expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa”, the PDMA said in its advisory.
