Free water tanker supply under DC quota banned in Karachi – HUM News

KARACHI: The Karachi commissioner has decided to halt the free supply of water tankers under the Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) quota and has issued a formal letter to the Water and Sewerage Corporation.

According to the commissioner, the DC quota is no longer required under the Water and Sewerage Corporation Act, especially amid the city’s worsening water shortage. He added that the suspension of this quota would help ensure fair distribution and delivery of water across Karachi.

Water Corporation officials said that nearly 100 million gallons of water per day were being supplied free of cost under the DC quota. However, no payments have been made against this allocation since 2015. The Sindh government currently owes Rs 4 billion to the corporation in this regard.

Officials further revealed that complaints had also been received about misuse of the DC quota, with reports of free tankers being sold in the market.

Large parts of the city remain gripped by worsening water shortages, as Karachi needs over 1,200 million gallons daily (MGD) but receives only 650 MGD.

Line losses and theft further reduce the supply, forcing many residents to face acute scarcity and depend heavily on private water tankers.
