Constitutional amendment: NA special committee session ends in deadlock – HUM News

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the National Assembly’s special committee, convened to discuss the proposed 26th constitutional amendment, ended without any breakthrough as the deadlock between political parties persists.

While the government submitted its draft for the 26th constitutional amendment, both the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf failed to present their drafts.

Despite ongoing discussions, no consensus could be reached on the proposed amendment. The committee will reconvene at 12 pm tomorrow to continue negotiations, sources said.

Earlier, Shahida Akhtar Ali  of JUI-F, Sherry Rehman of PPP and Ijazul Haq attended the meeting chaired by special committee chairman Khurshid Shah.

Senator Rana Mehmoodul Hasan of the Pakistan People’s Party returned from the United States to participate.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui, Anusha Rehman, and Senator Kamran Murtaza, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also and Maulana Fazlur Rrhman also attended the meeting.

Representatives of PTI’s allied parties, Barrister Gohar, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Aamir Dogar and Raja Nasir Abbas also joined the discussions.

During the meeting, Law Minister Nazeer Tarar formally presented the government proposal to the committee, expressing hope for a consensus.

Talking to the media, he said it remained unclear when they will reach a consensus.

Tarar said, “We have presented our suggestions, including input from bar associations, regarding judicial accountability. There should be laws in place for the accountability of judges who fail to perform their duty. These issues were discussed again in the committee today.”

He said that the PTI has requested additional time to review the government draft but it did not provide its own draft. “We have repeatedly asked for their input on the draft,” he said.
