23 per cent hike in Karachi water bills approved – HUM News

KARACHI: Amid a rise in other utility bills, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has approved a 23 per cent hike in water and sewerage bills.

The approval to this effect was given during a board meeting chaired by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab.

The increase, which includes a 14 per cent rise in water charges and a nine per cent hike in sewerage charges, will take effect from next month.

This latest increase adds to the financial burden on citizens already grappling with rising utility expenses.

Punjab’s electricity subsidy package could face two-month delay

The hike has also met with strong opposition from Jamaat-e-Islami, whose leader in the Karachi City Council, Saifuddin Advocate, condemned the move.

“The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board is a failing institution, unable to provide basic services to the citizens. This increase is unacceptable,” he stated.

Additionally, it has been confirmed that a municipal tax is now being collected through electricity bills, further adding to the cost of living in Karachi.

The decision is part of broader efforts by the city administration to address the growing financial needs of municipal services.
