Rajkummar Rao will headline the biopic on former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. The biopic drama has sparked discussions for a long time, and recently, Ganguly confirmed the news, stirring the internet. He also announced the film’s expected release date.
While speaking to the media in West Bengal’s Bardhaman on Thursday, former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly confirmed that Rajkummar Rao would play the lead role in his long-awaited biopic. However, he noted that scheduling conflicts would delay the film’s release.
“From what I’ve heard, Rajkummar Rao will play the role (the titular role)… but there are issues with dates… so it will take more than a year to hit the screens,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
This announcement holds significance, as filmmakers previously speculated on several Bollywood actors, including Ayushmann Khurrana and Ranbir Kapoor, as potential leads for the film.
Before this, Rao starred in the biographical drama about visually impaired industrialist and Bollant Industries founder Srikanth Bolla. Tushar Hiranandani directed the film, which also featured Jyothika, Alaya F, and Sharad Kelkar in key roles. Audiences widely appreciated Rao’s compelling performance and portrayal of Bolla.
On the other hand, the “Stree 2” actor showcased his cricket skills in Sharan Sharma’s “Mr & Mrs Mahi”, starring alongside Janhvi Kapoor.
Looking ahead, Rajkummar will soon star alongside “Baby John” fame Wamiqa Gabbi in “Bhool Chuk Maaf”. The teaser for the upcoming family comedy-drama, released just a few days ago, highlights the lead characters choosing a wedding date. However, the story takes a hilarious turn when Rajkummar’s character finds himself trapped in a loop involving the date.
Karan Sharma directs the film, which Dinesh Vijan presents under Maddock Films in association with Amazon MGM Studios. The movie will hit theaters on April 10, 2025.
Additionally, Rajkummar is working on his debut home production film, “Toaster”, where he stars alongside Sanya Malhotra.
