Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi recently opened up about a memorable piece of advice she received early in her career from filmmaker David Dhawan.
In an interview with Mashable India, the Gangs of Wasseypur actress reflected on her journey and the constant conversations about body positivity in Bollywood, where actresses are often trolled for gaining weight.
Huma shared that shortly after her 2012 debut film hit the screens, she bumped into David Dhawan at a cafe in Mumbai. She was thrilled when the Judwaa director recognized her and initiated a conversation. During their chat, Dhawan offered her some valuable advice about ignoring societal pressures related to body image.
“He said, ‘Beta, you are a very good actor. Tereko bahaut log bolenge weight loss karle, surgery karle, kuch nahi karna,’” Huma recalled, translating to: “A lot of people will ask you to lose weight, get surgery done, don’t do any of it.” Dhawan assured her that since the audience had accepted her in her debut role, she didn’t need to change herself for others.
Huma found the advice uplifting, noting, “And that coming from industry seniors… you just write it down: ‘Yeh bhoolna nahi hai.’”
Huma, a strong advocate for body positivity, also produced the film Double XL in 2022, which dealt with similar issues. She will next appear in Jolly LLB 3 alongside Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi.
