Azan Sami refuses to disown father Adnan Sami over Indian citizenship

KARACHI: Renowned actor Azaan Sami Khan has said that while he disagrees with the decisions of his father, singer Adnan Sami Khan, as a Pakistani, he continues to respect him as a son.

Azaan shared his thoughts during a recent podcast, where he spoke candidly on various topics.
The actor revealed that on several occasions, people had urged him not only to publicly criticize his father but also to announce his disassociation from him.

Speaking during a recent conversation, Azan revealed that he has repeatedly faced social and personal pressure to distance himself from his father not just privately, but publicly. “People ask me to take a stand against him. To reject him. To act like he’s not my father. But I won’t do that,” he said with calm defiance. “I disagree with his decision. But I am his son and I will remain his son.”

Azan emphasized that Adnan Sami’s decision to abandon Pakistani nationality was a personal choice one he does not endorse, nor does he take responsibility for it. “Whether people call it a mistake or even a sin it wasn’t mine,” he said pointedly. “I had nothing to do with that decision, yet I am constantly judged for it.”

He went on to highlight a sense of irony and injustice: “My grandfathers served Pakistan in top government positions. My roots, my work, and my life it’s all in Pakistan. Still, I am the one people target.”

Azan drew attention to a deeper societal problem the demand to reject one’s family for the sake of public approval. “Islam teaches us to respect our parents, even when we disagree. Pakistani society says family comes first. But when it comes to me, people forget both,” he said.

Despite his personal and ideological differences with his father, Azan made it clear that disowning him is not an option. “You can hate what someone did, but you don’t have to hate the person completely,” he reflected.

He also condemned the online abuse he regularly faces, calling it hypocritical. “People who claim to fight for tolerance, who talk about being secular, are the same ones who insult me for something I didn’t even do,” he said, expressing deep disappointment at the level of discourse on social media.

Azan’s stance choosing silence over slander, disagreement over disownment is a quiet rebellion against the outrage culture that demands public condemnation of even the most personal matters. In a time where cancel culture dominates public opinion, Azan Sami Khan has chosen a rare path: one of conviction, dignity, and emotional maturity.
