Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their separation after nearly three decades of marriage. The couple, who tied the knot in 1995, share three children—Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
Rahman took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts, describing the situation as a “fragile chapter” in their lives. “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again,” he wrote, thanking friends for their kindness and requesting privacy.
Their daughter Khatija Rahman expressed similar sentiments on Instagram, urging respect for the family’s privacy. “I would greatly appreciate it if this matter could be treated with the utmost privacy and respect. Thank you for your consideration,” she wrote. Ameen, their son, echoed the request, stating, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.”
In a joint statement, the couple’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, confirmed the separation, citing “significant emotional strain” in their relationship. “Despite their deep love for each other, the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them,” the statement read.
