- AR Rahman and his wife shocked fans by announcing their separation.
- On the same day, his bassist Mohini Dey also announced her divorce.
- This led to online speculation about a link between the two events.
Renowned music composer AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu shocked fans on Tuesday evening by announcing their decision to separate after nearly three decades of marriage. The couple, who tied the knot in 1995 and share three children, described their decision as arising from “pain and agony” in their relationship.
The announcement coincided with bassist Mohini Dey also declaring the end of her marriage, leading to online speculation about a possible link between the two events.
However, Vandana Shah, the couple’s legal representative, dismissed the rumors in an interview with Republic TV, stating, “Not at all. There is no link at all. Saira and Mr. Rahman made this decision on their own.”
Shah described the separation as “amicable,” emphasizing, “When a marriage ends, it is a painful decision. No one is happy when a marriage ends. Divorce is not an occasion to be celebrated. Saira has been through her ups and downs in this marriage.” While she refrained from revealing specific reasons for the split, she highlighted that both Rahman and Banu were committed to moving forward positively, whether together or apart.
Their last public appearance together was at Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani’s wedding, which Shah confirmed was genuine, not a “marriage sham.” Hours after the announcement, Rahman shared an emotional note on X, addressing the separation.
