Angelina Jolie expressed uncertainty about joining a rom-com anytime soon. While promoting her latest film “Maria” at its Los Angeles premiere, Jolie shared her thoughts on the idea of starring in a romantic comedy.
Speaking to the media, the Oscar-winning actress shared that her closest experience with a rom-com was playing Maleficent in Disney’s 2014 film and its 2019 sequel.
In the “Maleficent” movies, Jolie’s character develops feelings for Diaval. Despite her years in Hollywood, Jolie has never taken on a true romance movie, though many of her characters have had subtle romantic storylines. Her filmography leans heavily toward thrillers, including titles like “Girl, Interrupted”, ”Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”, and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”.
While sitting down for an interview with the entertainment portal, the Hollywood star shared, “I don’t know how good I’d be at a rom-com.” She further added, “I think Maleficent was the closest I got; I thought she was in love with Diaval. I thought it was a bit of a rom-com; I may have been on my own there.”
In her new project, “Maria”, Jolie takes on the role of opera singer Maria Callas. Although the film previously premiered at the Venice Film Festival, Jolie shared insights about her connection to the character during its recent premiere in Los Angeles.
Jolie shared that, while audiences think her connection to Callas involves multiple aspects, she feels a deep connection to the opera singer through their shared experience of loneliness.
Elaborating on the statements, she said, “I think what we have in common maybe is that we share a certain loneliness in kind of sometimes doing our work where we’re the one, I don’t know, up at night, alone, trying to figure something out or feeling like we have to.”
Selected theaters will release “Maria” on November 27.
