The winners of the 70th National Film Awards, which honored films released in 2022, were announced on August 16.
Rahman received the Best Music Director (Background Score) award for his exceptional work on Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Ponniyin Selvan Part 1, a major blockbuster of 2022.
With this latest accolade, Rahman has become India’s most-awarded music director, surpassing other industry legends.
Ilaiyaraaja, who previously held the record with five National Awards, ranks second, with his last win in 2015 for the Tamil film Tharai Thappattai. Vishal Bhardwaj is in third place for his contributions to Hindi cinema.
