Pakistan successfully launches first Hyperspectral Satellite HS-1 from China – BOL News


KARACHI: Pakistan has successfully launched its first Hyperspectral Satellite (HS-1) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre (JSLC) in China. The event was broadcast live from the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) headquarters in Karachi.

According to the SUPARCO, the HS-1 satellite marks a major technological milestone under Pakistan’s National Space Policy and Vision 2047, positioning the country at the forefront of space-based environmental and agricultural monitoring in the region.

Mission Capabilities and Objectives:

Equipped with state-of-the-art hyperspectral sensors, HS-1 is capable of capturing data across 130 spectral bands, allowing for high-resolution imaging of land, water, and atmospheric conditions. This technological advancement will support a wide range of national priorities, including:

Disaster forecasting and response, such as floods, landslides, and earthquakes

Climate change monitoring, including glacier tracking and drought assessment

Urban planning and infrastructure mapping

Environmental protection, including smog detection and air quality analysis

Agricultural productivity, through precision farming, soil health diagnostics, and irrigation management

Officials stated that the satellite could help increase agricultural yields by up to 30% through improved monitoring and resource management.

A Boost to Food and Water Security:

The HS-1 satellite is expected to play a crucial role in tackling challenges related to food security and water scarcity. It will provide detailed data on crop health, water shortages, and forest cover, allowing for timely interventions and strategic planning in the face of environmental and climatic shifts.

A Milestone Year for SUPARCO:

The launch of HS-1 marks Pakistan’s third satellite mission in 2025, following the successful deployment of EO-1 and KS-1 earlier this year. According to SUPARCO, all three satellites are part of an expanding national space portfolio focused on advanced earth observation technologies.

Vision 2047: Towards a Technologically Advanced Pakistan:

Speaking at the event, SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan congratulated the nation on the successful launch and emphasized the significance of this achievement under the Vision 2047 initiative, which aims to elevate Pakistan into the ranks of technologically advanced nations by its centennial year.

“This mission is a cornerstone in Pakistan’s journey toward space self-reliance and environmental resilience,” said Chairman Khan. “With the government’s support, HS-1 is now a reality — a testament to our growing scientific and engineering capabilities.”

Brigadier Aftab, another senior SUPARCO official, highlighted that the satellite will enhance Pakistan’s ability to respond to global challenges like climate change and rapid urbanization.

Next Steps:

The HS-1 satellite is expected to enter its designated orbit later today. An in-orbit testing phase will follow, lasting approximately two months, after which the satellite will become fully operational.

This latest launch signals a new era for Pakistan’s space ambitions, blending technological innovation with critical socio-economic applications across agriculture, climate, and infrastructure.
