RAWALPINDI: RAWALPINDI: A 55-year-old Belgian tourist, Cornelis Frederik Maurice, who had arrived in Pakistan on a 90-day tourist visa issued in August this year, died in Rawalpindi after being found severely injured.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear.
According to reports, Frederick Maurice had been staying in Rawalpindi since his arrival in Pakistan.
On September 30, he was found in a critically injured condition behind the Civil Lines area. Rescue 1122 personnel shifted him to a nearby hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Rawalpindi.
Rescue officials later informed the police that the body of the Belgian citizen was at the hospital mortuary.
Police registered a case on the complaint of a sub-inspector.
Rescue 1122 officials said the foreign national is believed to have died in a road accident.
The First Information Report (FIR) stated that an unidentified motorcyclist hit Frederick Maurice, leaving him critically injured, and he later died from his wounds.
Rawalpindi police spokesperson Sajjad Ahmed confirmed to Urdu News that Maurice was a Belgian citizen who had come to Pakistan on a tourist visa.
He said that the body was sent back to Belgium via Islamabad airport a day earlier.
Police said that the Belgian embassy in Islamabad had been taken into confidence before completing arrangements for the repatriation of the body.
Investigating Officer Fayaz Hussain Jafri said preliminary findings indicate that Maurice’s death resulted from an accident, and efforts are ongoing to trace the motorcyclist. However, no breakthrough has been achieved so far, and the investigation is still under way.
The Belgian Embassy in Islamabad did not respond to queries about the incident.
