Government sources said that no progress had been made in the case, and continuing proceedings was wasting official resources.
It may be recalled that on May 9, 2023, nationwide protests erupted following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan from the premises of the Islamabad High Court in the Al-Qadir Trust case.
During the protests, government, military and private properties were attacked and set on fire, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz office in Lahore’s Model Town. At least eight people were killed and 290 injured during the violence.
Protesters also stormed the residence of the Lahore corps commander, known as Jinnah House, and damaged a gate of the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
Following the unrest, law enforcement agencies arrested around 1,900 people involved in clashes, arson and vandalism across the country. Cases were also registered against Imran Khan, PTI leaders and party workers.
Similar cases of firing and vandalism were registered in Mardan on May 9, naming PTI leaders, workers and several unidentified persons.
