KARACHI: Journalist and anchorperson Imtiaz Mir was injured in a gun attack in in Karachi on Saturday night, police said.
The incident occurred when Mir was on his way home. As he reached the Malir Kala Board area, armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle. His brother, Muhammad Saleh, was driving the car at the time.
According to police, Mir sustained three bullet wounds while Saleh received one. Both were shifted to a private hospital, where Mir was initially placed on a ventilator. Police said on Monday that the journalist is now out of danger.
Karachi police DIG Farrukh Lanjhar told BBC Urdu that Mir’s condition had stabilised. He also visited the hospital to meet the injured journalist.
The DIG said CCTV footage from the crime scene had been obtained to help trace the attackers, adding that the incident appeared to be a case of personal enmity.
Mir has been associated with journalism for over a decade. He hosts current affairs programmes on Sindhi channel “Awaz” and Urdu channel “Metro 1 News”.
He was also among the journalists who visited Israel; however, DIG Lanjhar clarified that the attack was unrelated to that trip.
Saleh, who was also injured in the attack, said they had been targeted due to personal enmity.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of what his spokesperson, Abdur Rasheed Channa, called a “murderous attack on senior journalist Imtiaz Mir.” The CM expressed regret over the incident and sought a report from Sindh Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon.
Meanwhile, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the provincial government was committed to ensuring journalists’ safety and that the culprits would soon be brought to justice.
On July 21, 2025, Pakistan’s senate unanimously passed a comprehensive series of amendments to Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act, including a number of changes to better safeguard the security, welfare, and working conditions of media workers.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) had hailed the government of Pakistan for unanimously passing an act in the Senate regarding the protection of journalists and media professionals.
