Sindh on high alert as floods likely to hit next week – HUM News


KARACHI: The Sindh government has stepped up preparations as floodwater is expected to reach Guddu Barrage on September 3, raising concerns over possible flooding across several districts.

Chief Secretary Sindh Asif Haider Shah visited the Provincial Flood Control Room in Karachi, where he was briefed on the latest flood situation by the control room in-charge.

Officials informed him that the water flow at Guddu Barrage upstream has reached 389,298 cusecs, while downstream it stands at 356,942 cusecs.

At Sukkur Barrage, the upstream flow is currently 315,272 cusecs, with a downstream flow of 260,512 cusecs. Similarly, Kotri Barrage has recorded 262,668 cusecs upstream and 230,212 cusecs downstream.

The Chief Secretary was told that floodwater from Guddu Barrage is expected to pass through on September 3, raising the risk of flooding in several low-lying areas.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that its warehouses in Karachi, Jamshoro, and Sukkur are stocked with 268,000 tents, 278,000 blankets, and 1.8 million mosquito nets to support relief efforts if needed.

Earlier, Sindh Agriculture Minister Muhammad Bux Mahar had directed officials to ensure strict monitoring of protective embankments and prepare evacuation plans for residents living near vulnerable areas.

He warned that 10 union councils and over 125,000 people could be affected if the flood situation worsens.

Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro assured Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah that all protective measures were being implemented, especially as high flood levels are feared in the Indus River by Tuesday or Wednesday night.
