Bad weather: Schools in KP closed for a week – HUM News

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has ordered the closure of all public and private schools in the province’s cold and mountainous districts for one week due to bad weather and flood threats.

According to a notification issued by the Education Department, schools in the upper areas will remain closed from August 19 to August 25.

The private and public schools in Swat and Malakand Division of KP will also remain closed for a week.

According to the notification, classes will be conducted online during the closure period.

It is worth mentioning that schools in these colder hilly regions usually observe only one month of summer vacation, from July 1 to July 31, while institutions in the plains remain shut until August 31.

Fear grips Buner as residents hesitate to return to flood-hit homes

Now, with schools in hilly districts reopened on schedule, the provincial authorities have decided to suspend classes again as a precautionary step amid warnings of cloudbursts and flooding in these areas.

The recent spell of heavy rains and flash floods has severely impacted the education sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with official figures confirming that 61 government schools have been completely destroyed and 414 others damaged in various districts.

Among the schools reduced to rubble are 52 primary, seven middle, and two high schools. Lower Dir has suffered the heaviest losses, where 17 primary schools have been demolished. Shangla follows with eight schools destroyed. In Haripur, seven school buildings collapsed, including five primary, one middle, and one high school.

Authorities caution that the tally of damaged and destroyed schools may increase as more assessment reports are received from affected areas.
