PAKPATTAN: The Medical Superintendent (MS) and  Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Health at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Pakpattan have been arrested for “criminal negligence” following the death of 20 children at the hospital.

During a surprise visit to the hospital, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed police to arrest Medical Superintendent Dr Adnan Ghaffar and CEO Health Pakpattan Dr Sohail Asghar over what she called “criminal negligence” after families of patients complained about severe mismanagement, medicine shortages, and staff negligence.

She immediately removed both officials from their posts and instructed that a new Medical Superintendent be appointed from Sahiwal.

The visit came weeks after at least 20 children lost their lives in the hospital’s paediatric ward between June 16 and 22, with five deaths reported in a single day.

Angry over the poor state of services, Maryam Nawaz also took Pakpattan’s Deputy Commissioner to task over the overcharging of parking fees and lack of medicines. She removed him from his position and ordered a complete audit of hospital equipment.
