Riyadh: Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his decision to skip the revamped FIFA Club World Cup, prioritizing rest and preparation to extend his illustrious playing career.
The Portuguese superstar, who recently led Portugal to victory in the UEFA Nations League, shared his thoughts on Saturday, just days after extending his contract with Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr.
Ronaldo’s new two-year deal with Al Nassr, confirmed on Thursday, ensures he remains at the Riyadh-based club beyond his 42nd birthday—potentially his final appearance in a World Cup. The next edition is scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.
Rumors had circulated last month regarding Ronaldo’s possible participation in the Club World Cup, especially after FIFA President Gianni Infantino indicated discussions were underway about his involvement, despite Al Nassr not qualifying. Ronaldo quickly dismissed these speculations.
“I had options to play in the Club World Cup, but I decided it didn’t make sense because I need to rest and prepare properly,” Ronaldo explained in a video posted by Al Nassr on X . “This season will be very long, especially with the World Cup at the end of the year. I want to be ready for both my club and my national team.”
He emphasized his commitment to Portugal and his club, adding, “I just finished playing the last game for the Nations League and focused on my goals. I love playing for Al Nassr, and I want to be in the best shape to help them succeed.”
Earlier this month, Ronaldo scored for Portugal in the Nations League final against Spain, which ended in a 2-2 draw before Portugal triumphed on penalties. His primary aim at Al Nassr remains winning major trophies, and he expressed confidence in achieving that goal.
“My goal is to win something big with Al Nassr. I believe I can be a champion here,” he said. “That’s why I extended my contract—because I believe in winning at this club.”
Since joining Al Nassr in 2022 after leaving Manchester United as a free agent, Ronaldo has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances across all competitions.
He is also chasing a career milestone of 1,000 goals, with his current tally standing at 932—794 at club level and 138 for Portugal.
As Ronaldo continues his journey, his focus remains on longevity, success, and making a lasting impact both at the club and international levels.
