“A Minecraft Movie” surprised many by becoming one of 2025’s biggest theatrical hits, and now the fantasy adventure comedy is heading to streaming. Director Jared Hess has scheduled the film to premiere on Max on June 20, with an HBO release set for June 21 at 8 p.m. ET. Subscribers to HBO Max will be able to stream the movie starting on these dates. The film is based on the iconic Mojang Studios game, which has been a global phenomenon since its 2011 launch.
What is A Minecraft Movie About?
The story follows Steve, played by Jack Black, who struggles with declining sales in his doorknob business. He meets Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, a game store owner played by Jason Momoa, in the Overworld. Together, they plan to battle monsters in a quest to return to the real world.
Sebastian Hansen as Henry and Emma Myers as Natalie join the team, along with their real estate agent Dawn, played by Danielle Brooks. Together, they team up to defeat Malgosha, the piglin ruler of the Nether—a hellish realm within the same block universe.
After its initial release on April 4, “A Minecraft Movie” earned $951 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2025. It also ranks among the top two video game adaptations of all time, second only to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, which debuted two years earlier.
Amid a challenging year for the film industry, “A Minecraft Movie” emerged as a beacon of hope. Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen celebrated the film’s unexpectedly positive reception and box office success.
Allison Schroeder, Chris Bowman, and Hubbel Palmer planned the film and also contributed to the screenplay along with Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta. The production cost a staggering \$150 million, which the film recovered more than five times over thanks to its immensely successful box office run.
