Motorway police denies ban on Suzuki Alto – HUM News

LAHORE: The National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) have dismissed reports claiming that Suzuki Alto has been banned from motorways from April 1st due to safety concerns.

As speculation spread online, the NHMP clarified that no such decision had been made. The rumours of the ban surfaced after a tragic accident involving an Alto and a truck, in which the car was destroyed. It was also rumoured that a fine of Rs 5000 will be charged on those who drive the car on the motorway.

The accident has raised concerns about the safety of small cars on high-speed roads.

An NHMP official told local media that the reports were baseless and no ban had been imposed.

Despite being one of Pakistan’s best-selling hatchbacks, the 660cc Alto has come under scrutiny due to its lack of essential safety features. Unlike Japanese models, the locally assembled VX variant lacks airbags and an anti-lock braking system (ABS), making it more vulnerable to accidents.

With a weight of around 700 kg and weak structural panels, the Alto offers minimal protection in high-speed crashes. Experts warn that at motorway speeds exceeding 100 km/h, the absence of ABS and airbags increases the risk of fatal accidents.

Meanwhile, Pak Suzuki also denied claims that the company plans to discontinue the Alto in Pakistan.

While the Alto remains a popular choice for urban commuting due to its affordability and fuel efficiency, experts recommend vehicles with reinforced structures, airbags, ABS, and proper crumple zones for safer motorway travel.
