President Zardari calls for salary, pension increase in next budget – HUM News

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has said that today, the common man, labourers and the salaried class are facing severe economic hardships in Pakistan.”

Addressing the joint session of parliament at the start of the parliamentary year, he said that “Our citizens are burdened by inflation, high prices of essential goods, and rising energy costs.”

Zardari urged parliament and the government to provide real relief to the public in the upcoming budget.

“The government should take steps in the next budget to increase salaries and pensions, reduce income tax on the salaried class, and lower energy costs,” he said.

He stressed the need to avoid job cuts and instead focus on job creation and utilizing a trained workforce.

Highlighting the significance of his address, Zardari said, “It is my singular honour to address this house as a civilian president for the eighth time at the start of the parliamentary year. This moment reflects the continuity of our democratic journey.”

During his speech, the opposition members created a ruckus with loud slogans. As soon as the speech began, PTI members banged their desks in protest, forcing the president to wear headphones amid the uproar.

Call for Unity and Cooperation

President Zardari urged the need for national unity and political stability. He invited the opposition to put national interest above personal and political differences and work together for economic recovery, strengthening democracy, and upholding the rule of law.

“We must work with determination for a better future for Pakistan; the country needs unity and political stability,” Zardari said.

“Economy Has Stabilised”

Reflecting on the government’s one-year performance, Zardari said the national economy has stabilised. “The government has reduced the policy rate from 22 per cent to 12 per cent,” he said.

He pointed out that during this period, foreign direct investment increased, and the reduction in the policy rate was a positive step. “The rise in foreign exchange reserves is a welcome development,” he added.

Zardari stressed the need to focus on public service sectors and the development of underprivileged areas.

“We must promote good governance and political stability and further improve the tax system,” he said.

“The people have pinned their hopes on parliament, and we must live up to their expectations,” the president remarked, adding that promoting social justice and focusing on public welfare projects is essential for the country’s progress.
