American Airline flight to India diverted after bomb threat

WASHINGTON: An American Airlines flight from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City, bound for New Delhi, India, was diverted following a bomb threat.

Flight 292, which was near Turkmenistan at the time, was turned back and landed safely at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport after being escorted by Italian Air Force jets.

The airline stated that the diversion was due to a “possible security issue” onboard, which was later determined to be a “non-credible” threat.

According to ABC News, the bomb threat was received via email. Indian authorities requested that the aircraft undergo a security check before proceeding to New Delhi.

A video shared on social media showed the plane being escorted by two fighter jets as it landed in Rome.

The flight had 199 passengers and 15 crew members on board, all of whom were safely evacuated and taken to a terminal for screening while the aircraft was thoroughly inspected.

American Airlines released a statement saying, “We are working closely with local authorities and will provide updates as the situation develops. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our passengers.”

This incident is part of a broader trend of fake bomb threats that have significantly impacted Indian airlines, particularly during the second half of 2024.

Last year, over 700 bomb threats were reported, with the vast majority targeting Indian carriers.

Only 14 threats were directed at flights operated by foreign airlines traveling to and from India.

Recently, 13 individuals were arrested on suspicion of making hoax bomb threats, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the aviation sector in addressing such security concerns.

Indian media has reported that the threat was likely a hoax, reflecting the persistent issue of fake bomb threats disrupting air travel.
