The tragic passing of 24-year-old South Korean actress Kim Sae Ron has reignited discussions on the relentless online hate faced by Hallyu celebrities. The Bloodhounds star, who debuted at just 9 years old, was found dead in her Seoul home on February 16, with police confirming her death as a suicide.
Kim faced intense backlash following her 2022 DUI incident, where she crashed into a transformer box while intoxicated. Although she was fined 20 million won ($13,850 US) and issued a public apology, the hostility persisted, preventing her from making a professional comeback. “Kim Sae Ron’s death feels like one of someone pushed to the edge,” said Yale psychiatry professor Na Jong Ho. “A society that buries people without giving them a second chance after a mistake is not a healthy one.”
Singer Migyo also condemned the online harassment: “Only when a person dies do the malicious commenters stop.” Despite seeking regular work, Kim faced public scrutiny even at a café job, leading to her dismissal. Reflecting on her struggles, an online community statement read: “Kim Sae Ron acknowledged her mistakes, apologised, and tried to move on… but the constant hostility exceeded what anyone could bear.”
Her death has since sparked overdue conversations about media responsibility and cyberbullying.
