Hamas, PLO strongly reject Trump’s Gaza plan

GAZA: Hamas senior official Izzat el-Reshiq said on Wednesday (February 5) that the group “strongly reject” US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plans.

Speaking to Reuters out of Doha, Reshiq demanded “the US President to retract these statements because such statements add fuel to the fire”.

He also called on Arabic nations to hold an “urgent Arab-Islamic summit to look into such statements”.

Trump said on Tuesday (February 4) the US would take over war-ravaged Gaza and create a “Riviera of the Middle East” after resettling Palestinians elsewhere, shattering decades of US policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and drawing regional condemnation.

The shock move drew swift condemnation from regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia which Trump hopes will establish ties with Israel.

Trump unveiled his surprise plan without providing specifics, at a joint press conference with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The announcement followed Trump’s shock proposal earlier on Tuesday for the permanent resettlement of the more than two million Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries, calling the enclave – where the first phase of a fragile Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage release deal is in effect – a “demolition site.”

PLO REJECTS CALLS FOR DISPLACEMENT OF PALESTINIAN PEOPLE

Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Secretary General Hussein Sheikh said on Wednesday the PLO rejected all calls for the displacement of the Palestinian people from their homeland, after US President Donald Trump said Palestinians in the Gaza Strip could be resettled in neighbouring countries.

“The Palestinian leadership affirms its firm position that the two-state solution, in accordance with international legitimacy and international law, is the guarantee of security, stability and peace,” the PLO official said on X, formerly Twitter.

The PLO is internationally recognised as the official representative of the Palestinian people.
