WEB DESK: In a major leap forward for desktop computers, Apple has unveiled a brand new iMac model powered by 10-core M4 chip that comes with support for external displays of up to 8K resolution at 120Hz.
Despite the fact that it is undoubtedly an expensive device, this makes the latest iMac the first-ever Mac to support high-res display, beating high end devices including the MacBook Pro, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro.
The new iMac can handle up to two 6K displays at 60Hz each.
To note, Apple is not presently offering its own 8K display with a 120Hz refresh rate, this development could be a hint towards coming upgrades for its higher-end monitors.
Apple’s Pro Display XDR, currently maxing out at 6K resolution at 60Hz, and the Studio Display, which offers 5K resolution at 60Hz, might see major upgrades in the coming days. For now, no concrete rumours have surfaced regarding such enhancements.
For those unaware, the previous iMac with the M3 chip supported only one external display at up to 6K/60Hz. This remains unchanged for the latest base model with an 8-core M4 chip, while the 10-core version delivers this groundbreaking 8K support.
According to the MacRumors, Apple is expected to unveil new MacBook Pro models featuring M4 Pro and M4 Max chips soon, possibly as early as tomorrow, which could extend 8K/120Hz support to other devices in the Mac lineup.
